UKCA Marking
UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) is the product marking regime used for goods being placed on the market in Great Britain (England, Wales, and Scotland). It was introduced post-Brexit to replace the CE Mark for domestic compliance. However, in a major policy shift, the UK government announced that the CE Mark will be recognized indefinitely for most standard machinery regulations.
For North American manufacturers, this provides a choice. You can certify your machinery to UK-specific legislation and apply the UKCA mark, or you can simply rely on your existing EU CE Mark compliance to access the British market. If you choose the UKCA route, you must reference UK "Designated Standards" (rather than Harmonized Standards) and sign a UK Declaration of Conformity (DoC).
Crucially, the UKCA mark is not valid for Northern Ireland, which follows specific EU-aligned rules (requiring the CE mark or the UKNI mark). Additionally, while Trading Standards accepts the CE mark, having the UKCA mark can be a strategic preference for companies wishing to demonstrate specific commitment to the British market.
