Battery Regulation
The EU Battery Regulation (2023/1542) represents a major compliance shift, replacing the older directive with stricter, immediately enforceable laws. For North American machinery manufacturers, this is critical: if your equipment includes batteries—whether for backup power, mobility, or operation—you fall under its scope. Unlike previous rules, this regulation treats batteries as standalone products requiring their own CE Mark and Declaration of Conformity (DoC), even when embedded in equipment.
Key requirements now cover the full lifecycle, including carbon footprint declarations, recycled content targets, and strict supply chain due diligence. A major innovation is the Digital Battery Passport, required for larger industrial batteries, which ensures transparency via QR codes. Manufacturers must verify that their battery suppliers meet these Essential Health & Safety Requirements (EHSRs). Failure to document this Component Compliance in the Technical File can lead to customs blockages, making rigorous supply chain verification essential before Placing on the Market.
